As the weather gets colder, we all like to turn to a hot cup of something to warm up the soul. With the long lists of coffees, teas and even hot chocolates, there are plenty of options to choose from. I am personally a coffee fiend. Soy lattes are my drug of choice, but I am trying to change my wicked ways and find an alternative, which I think I’ve managed to do with the Matcha Latte.
The word Matcha has suddenly become VERY popular. Matcha seems to have made its way into many ingredient lists from cookies to chocolate. The colour green is in.
Matcha is a Japanese green tea powder high in antioxidants, fiber and chlorophyll. The list of health benefits associated with Matcha is HUGE! Matcha can be affective in boosting your metabolism, detoxifying, enhancing your mood, providing vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium and helping to lower cholesterol and blood sugar.
Sounds great, doesn’t it?!
One way I like to add Matcha to my diet is by drinking Matcha Lattes. Although a quick word of warning that cafes such as Starbucks do now offer Matcha lattes, but be cautious of the sugar content. They often add sugary sweeteners to their lattes making them an unhealthy option. You can get around this by making the lattes at home.
Homemade Matcha lattes are super easy. All you need is good quality Matcha powder, which can be bought in a health food store or online, a milk substitute of your choice and a sweetener if you like things a little on the sweet side.
To get started, heat up one cup of milk. I personally like to use coconut and rice milk, but feel free to use any milk you like. Once warm, add one teaspoon of Matcha powder and a tablespoon of sweetener, such as honey or agave, and stir well. To make it nice and frothy, I like to add the mixture to my blender and give it a little mix. You don’t have to do this, but it does make the latte a bit more special.
So all you have to do now is go and make your very own Matcha latte and enjoy. Let us know how it goes in the comments section!
